Downed Power Lines & Electrical Hazards

Always assume downed wires are energized and deadly. Electricity can arc through air, travel through water, and energize objects dozens of feet away.

Safety Rules:

  • Stay away from any downed line or damaged equipment
  • Never touch anything in contact with a power line
  • Never drive over downed wires
  • Keep children and pets away from unfamiliar wires or damaged equipment
  • Never enter water near electrical equipment or transformers

Portable Generator Safety

Generators can be deadly if used improperly. Carbon monoxide poisoning and electrical hazards kill dozens of people each year during power outages.

Critical Safety Requirements:

  • Never run a generator indoors or in garages, basements, or enclosed spaces—carbon monoxide kills within minutes
  • Do not operate generators in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces—generators produce deadly levels of carbon monoxide very quickly
  • Place generators away from buildings with exhaust pointing away from structures
  • Have a qualified, licensed electrician install your generator to ensure it meets local electrical codes and install a transfer switch to safely connect to your home
  • Use outdoor-rated extension cords and ensure the number of appliances plugged into the generator does not exceed its capacity
  • Never refuel while running—turn off and let cool first

Storm Preparedness

Preparing before severe weather improves safety and comfort during power outages.

Before a Storm:

  • Test generator and stock fuel supply
  • Charge phones and backup batteries
  • Stock flashlights, batteries, and non-perishable food
  • Unplug sensitive electronics to prevent surge damage
  • Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles
  • Know how to manually operate your garage door

During an Outage:

  • Leave one light switched on so you know when power returns
  • Monitor KLPD communications for restoration updates
  • Never use gas ovens, outdoor grills, or camp stoves indoors (carbon monoxide risk)
  • Keep refrigerator/freezer doors closed (food stays cold 4+ hours, frozen 24-48 hours)
